What to eat to live for 100 years
1. Eat fresh and whole foods
According to a Business Insider report, many of the people who live to the age of 100 eat fresh and whole food. They don’t eat much meat. 102 year old Deborah Szekely has spent her entire life raising animals. She grows many of her own vegetables on a farm in Baja California, Mexico, where she still works. 102-year-old Pearl Taylor, who lives in Dayton, Ohio, said that she eats mostly vegetarian food and sometimes also eats meat. She also drinks her own homemade green juice, which includes aloe vera root, celery, ginger and Splenda sweet water.
The second oldest person in New York, Lucie Jean Signor, is 112 years old. They eat foods like fruits, vegetables, beans and olive oil. He eats salad, fruits and vegetables at night. Apart from this, their food also includes tomato sauce and garlic, which is considered quite healthy. Eating this improves heart health, helps in weight loss and also improves brain health.

2. Eat only home cooked food
Pearl Taylor cooks all her meals at home. He has not eaten outside packaged food for years. 101-year-old William of Toronto cooks his food with lots of sardines, which he considers the secret of his longevity. 101-year-old Jack Van Nordheim, known as Uncle Jack on social media, never ate fast food. Instead, he used to eat only chicken and home-made foods.
Eating home-cooked meals means eating less ultra-processed foods, which reduces the risk of depression, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. A 2017 study published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity found that people who cook at home five times a week are healthier.
3. Eat only in moderation
Many Japanese who are over 100 years of age follow the ‘Hara Hachi Bu’ rule. Which means they eat until their stomach is 80% full. Yumi Yamamoto works for LongevityQuest. His great-grandmother Shigeyo Nakachi was the second oldest living person in Japan. He died in 2021. Yamamoto said that Nakachi never ate too much and did not finish all the chocolate in one sitting.

Similarly, Ireland’s oldest person, 108-year-old Martin McEvilly, who used to cycle regularly till the age of 99, says that everything in life should be kept in moderation. Japanese supercentenarians eat only in moderation. Yamamoto said the second-oldest person in history, Ken Tanaka, who lived to be 119, drank a bottle of Coca-Cola every day but also kept himself sober. Similarly, Szekely occasionally had coffee and ice cream. Uncle Jack credits his longevity to eating dark chocolate and honey daily.
What do experts say
Experts agree that your diet can be improved by including the right things in it. Nutritionist Nicole Ludlam-Rhine recommends following an 80/20 diet. He says that 80% of the time people eat healthy and the remaining 20% of the time they can eat some other or unhealthy things.
