TRAI New OTP Rule: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has decided to implement its new traceability guidelines. This guideline may come into effect from today i.e. 1st December. The purpose of these guidelines is to prevent spam and fraudulent messages and increase the security of consumers, but some people are considering it as a reason for delay in important messages like OTP (One-Time Password).
Under these guidelines, all telecom operators and messaging service providers will have to check the origin and authenticity of every message. All these steps are being taken under the Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) system, which was started to prevent spam and increase message traceability. Under this, the business has to register its sender ID (header) and message templates with the telecom operator. If a message does not match the registered template or header, it may be blocked or flagged.
What does TRAI say?
TRAI recently said in a post that the new guidelines will not cause any delay in OTP messages. It was claimed in some media reports that there may be a delay in OTP delivery due to the new rules, but TRAI termed this as false. He says, “This information is completely wrong. We will ensure that there is no delay of any kind for the traceability of the message.”
OTP messages are very important for digital transactions, authentication and secure login. Under the new rules, service providers will have to ensure that OTP messages conform to the registered template and headers. Its effect may be in the form of a slight delay.
Transition period: For businesses that are transitioning to the DLT system, message processing may take some time.
Verification Process: Now every OTP will have to go through a verification process, which may cause slight delays in delivery during peak times.
This way you can stay safe
Keep contact details updated: Make sure that your mobile number is correctly linked with all services.
Use app-based authentication: Wherever possible, have a backup option for app-based authentication for OTP.
Be patient: There may be some delay initially, but the situation will improve as businesses and telecom operators adjust to the new system.
messaging will be secure
Although there may be some initial hiccups, these TRAI guidelines are an important step towards creating a more secure messaging system for consumers. This system will help in preventing spam and fraudulent messages. As businesses and telecom operators follow the new rules, there may be a slight delay in OTP, but in the long run the security it provides will be completely beneficial.
